Press Kit

Everything a reporter needs to cover Retire My Parents in one place. If something is missing, ask me and I’ll get it to you the same day.

The story in one paragraph

Retire My Parents is a social experiment asking a simple question: can the Internet retire two hardworking parents for $1 each? My dad spent forty years in an Oregon plywood mill and still coached every team he could find time for. My mom grew up as one of thirteen kids and spent time in foster care, then spent her adult life helping raise other people’s children. They never had much, and they made a simple life feel like a really good one. The ask is one dollar. Every person who joins becomes one light in a visualization called One Million Lights, no matter how much they give — because the thing being measured is people, not dollars.

Quick facts

  • • Retire My Parents is a personal crowdfunding project, not a registered charity.
  • • Contributions are not tax-deductible charitable donations.
  • • Payments are processed by Stripe. Contribution amounts start at $1.
  • • One person counts as one participant regardless of the amount they give, so the participant count is a count of people.
  • • Where the money goes and how the totals are calculated is documented on the transparency page, with the trust questions answered on Why Trust This.
